The Town of Falmouth is seeking a detail-oriented, highly motivated professional to join the Building Division of our Community Development Department as a full-time Assistant Zoning Compliance Agent. This position plays a key role in protecting the community’s safety, accessibility, and quality of life by ensuring compliance with local zoning bylaws, wetlands ordinances, historic regulations, and other applicable requirements. This is a full-time, benefited position that works at the Falmouth Town Hall and in the field 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend work required on an overtime basis.
Under the general direction of the Building Commissioner, the Assistant Zoning Compliance Agent enforces zoning bylaws and related regulations, conducts inspections, and educates community members regarding those regulations. Key responsibilities include:
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in a regulatory or enforcement field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. An associate degree in planning or a related field and/or experience as a zoning or regulatory board member is preferred.
The Town will provide on-the-job training related to the Town’s zoning bylaws. However, working knowledge of building permit applications, Zoning Board of Appeals applications, Planning Board decisions and historic review processes is preferred. A valid Massachusetts driver’s license is required.
The successful candidate is a thoughtful and meticulous professional with the ability to interpret technical bylaws and regulations, assess compliance independently in the field, and apply enforcement consistently and impartially. Strong communication, customer service, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented municipal environment.
Expected Starting Range: Step 1 ($30.40/hour) – Step 7 ($38.47/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
